Chapter 1 - Hello (Again?)

Postby Anni » Sun May 19, 2013 9:31 pm

Earl’s 24-hour diner, a little way off the Las Vegas Strip, caters primarily to the late-night crowd of local residents, mostly dealers or croupiers who live in the city, and it also takes into account the city’s large Hispanic population, offering such menu items as migajas and menudo. Inexplicably, the time the Gods’ agents specified for the Scions to make each other’s acquaintance was at three in the morning.

The staff on duty are a world-weary waitress (Fern) and a short-order cook who doesn’t really give a shit what goes on in the restaurant as long as it doesn’t bother him in his kitchen (Jose). They’ve both seen it all and will turn a blind eye toward any antics short of physical violence. A drunken drag queen sleeps in a booth, leaning against a window. A wiry guy who looks like he might be a truck driver sips coffee and smokes Lucky Strikes on a stool at the bar. Neither of them gives a damn, either.

The sound of a heavy bike, a Harley-Davidson Fatboy, preceded his arrival several long moments before the metal beast carried Fenris Lokison into view. The bike slowed as he went through the shift where the parking lot met the road, and then rumbled up to the front of the diner. He put out the kickstand, hung his helmet on the throttle, and dismounted. Fenris rolled his neck, loosening muscles that had been held tightly for most of a day as he'd ridden across the majority of the continent to be where his father had... recommended he be. The smell of burnt amber and the ozone scent of lightning announced him to his fellow Scions and his nose flared as he turned it to the wind to take in the sense of his fellows in return. Thor's uppity tot was there, and was ignored in favor of...

Fenris grinned as he found the ichor of an Irish God's offspring. Perfect. He looked at Fern, who was staring at him from behind the diner's counter with widened eyes. "Two chicken burritos, sour cream and green peppers. Lots of cheese. And water." Fenris started to move away but Fern opened her mouth as if to hesitantly give a correction, the flash of his eyes convinced her otherwise. "Coming right up." He gave a sharp incline of his head, once. The 'that's what I thought' nod. He headed straight for the female at the back with the smell of emeralds and leprechaun about her.

Cass liked to watch. People-watch, that is. The comings and goings at Earl's diner, even at three in the morning, were phenomenal. Used to the quiet hum of Lincoln, Nebraska, nothing could have prepared her for the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. She sighed, sipping her black sludge that passed for coffee, and scoping out the other Scions. Thor's daughter was sat at a booth up front, playing a game of one-upmanship with Horus's son. Tezcatlipoca's boy was sat there too, all but asleep with his head on the table. Aphrodite's girl... well, it was clear that she took after her mother. Beautiful in the extreme, but as vacuous as space itself, she was sweet-talking someone who looked as though he could be a high-roller from one of the casinos, clearly making a play.

However, this bored Cass, and she had no desire whatsoever to socialise with these people. Sighing, she took a bite of her cherry pie. There were only two missing... and then the stench of burning amber wafted in as the door opened, the sharp crackle of electricity in the air. One of the Aesir, certainly, but... she wasn't sure whose offspring the guy was. She arched an elegant red eyebrow at him as he approached, having ordered his food, and she inclined her head in amusement. "Don't like the look of the stiffs down the front either?"

He sat heavily across from the red, his riding leathers creaking softly with his movements as he removed his riding gloves. "I'm related to Hammerchild, wouldn't be able to not make fun of the sand demon's name, can't pronounce the Indian’s, and while I don't mind a gal with experience I won't be the last man on the village bicycle. Besides, I like red hair and the Tuatha don't do stupid." He held out his hand as Fern was coming up behind him, taking the glass of water out of her hand before she even arrived really. "Another," and he proceeded to drain the glass quickly. When he smacked it down on the table in front of him he gave red a long look before explaining himself without being asked. "Road dust."

Short black hair, green eyes, and strong build made for his immediate physical impressions. While obviously strong he wasn't one of those grotesquely bulky bodybuilder types. He had a warrior's muscles, all long and lean, with what bulk he did have being the result of being able to level shield shattering blows rather than any use for baby oiled flexing. He was well over 6ft in height (6'8 to be exact) but broad of shoulder giving him a well-proportioned silhouette. He had at least a day's stubble on his face, which wasn't ugly but would be best described as striking more than handsome.

The Scion took a seat opposite her without being asked, and Cass offered him an amused tilt of her lips. It seemed as though he had a strong opinion on all of the other Scions present in the diner, and he wasn't backwards in coming forwards with those opinions. That was something she could come to like. Casually eyeing him, Cass took in his extreme height, the jet black hair and emerald green eyes, the smattering of dark stubble across his jaw giving him a dangerous air. Not the type of appearance usually associated with the Aesir, aside from the size. She narrowed her eyes a little, the amused smile tickling a little more as he drained his water, and explained away his thirst. "Apparently so," she replied, her smile growing into a grin.

She stretched a hand across the table, a hand with short, clean, well-shaped nails, light calluses on the inside of her thumb and index finger. "Cass MacLarney. As you correctly surmised, Tuatha. My dad's Manannan Mac Lir, Irish god of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll," she snorted. "Well, death and the sea, too. And you?"

He gave her a half grin that was endearing, if not earth shatteringly charming. He showed no teeth however. His hands were far more callused and significantly larger as suited his build. "You're gonna be surprised..." He shook her hand gently. "Fenris. Yes. That Fenris." If she wanted to snatch her hand away he kept his grip light so she could do so freely. "Fenris Lokison, to be specific. My dad is the god of fire, maniacal laughter, and mean spirited jokes."

An arched eyebrow and a wry twitch of the lips were the only indicators that Cass was more than a little surprised. She let her hand stay in his grip, shaking it firmly enough to let him know that she wasn't particularly bothered. "Damn, your parents didn't try very hard to hide your father's identity, did they," she snorted, quieting for a few seconds as the waitress - Fern, her nametag said - brought over a huge, sloppy plate of burritos, placing it down in front of Fenris. After Fern had walked away, muttering something to herself, Cass tossed the tall man a challenging look. "So is your dad as big an asshole as his reputation would have everyone believe?"

"Most people pronounce it Lockeson when they read it on paper, at least until that damned movie came out. And certain parties prefer I not be too well hidden for a variety of reasons." He growled, literally growled, in appreciation at the arrival of his food proceeded to eat them by hand. Pure Viking... or wolf, as the case may be. "Bigger, though he can argue you into thinking he's a saint if you give him the chance."

"At least with dear old daddy being Irish, and choosing to impregnate my mom, who's of Irish descent, it's easy enough for me to fly under the radar," she replied, taking another bite of her pie, and chewing thoughtfully. Easy, that was, until some of her paternal powers started manifesting in odd ways or at odd times. "My dad's a complete prick," she told him candidly. "Screwed mom often enough to get her pregnant, then disappeared back off to wherever he hid himself when I was growing up. Didn't get to meet him until I was a teenager." Suddenly, her pie didn't taste so good, and she pushed the plate away. "How about you? You know you dad well?"

"I know him about as well as I care to but then I'm more experienced than I look." He continued demolishing his plate of burritos, often chewing with his mouth open like a canine would, as if his teeth weren't designed for grinding at the back. He was ill mannered, fine, but then again he wasn't disgusting about it either. Just... animalistic. "I have insight, and sometimes he tells me what I think is the truth just for the novelty of it. I don't judge, either way. Your dad was probably afraid he'd take a liking to you, hard to put a kid you like between you and something dangerous enough to threaten a god but we're supposedly useless otherwise."
